This pair of nineteenth century Victorian country side chairs is constructed from timber with hand-woven cane seats and retains an original warm ochre scumble paint finish. Each chair features a carved crest rail with decorative patterns, a straight mid-rail, turned front legs, and box stretchers supporting the frame. The visible surface displays authentic wear along the edges of the paintwork, adding character to the design. Measuring 83.5 cm high, 40.5 cm wide, and 39.5 cm deep, these seating pieces are suitable for placement around a dining table, in a living room, or as decorative accents in a hallway. The sturdy framework and compact proportions allow them to function effectively in both traditional and relaxed interior settings throughout the home.

Scumble painting, popular in the 19th century, was a decorative technique where semi-translucent glazes were applied over a lighter base colour to imitate expensive wood grains like mahogany or walnut. Side chairs from this era were lightweight, versatile seating options used in dining rooms, halls, or bedrooms.

These chairs were typically constructed from regional timber such as pine or beech, which were then treated with painted finishes like scumbling. The seats were frequently woven from natural rattan cane, supported by turned wooden frames with stretchers for structural stability.

Authentic 19th-century painted chairs often exhibit natural surface wear, craquelure, and distress on high-touch areas such as the top rail, stretchers, and seat edges. Construction details like hand-carved crest motifs, traditional joinery, and hand-woven cane work also signal period authenticity.

Country Victorian chairs add texture and character when paired with modern oak or rustic timber dining tables. They can also serve as standalone accent pieces in hallways, alcoves, or bedrooms, balancing contemporary clean lines with historic painted patina.

To preserve original paintwork and cane, clean gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemicals or abrasive polish. Keep the furniture away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent the timber from warping or the paint glaze from flaking.
