Tea caddies originated in the 17th century when tea was an expensive imported luxury commodity, requiring secure, lockable containers to protect the contents from theft and moisture.

They were typically constructed from fine hardwoods such as mahogany, satinwood, and rosewood, often featuring intricate veneer work, marquetry, stringing, and brass escutcheons.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit period-appropriate hand-cut dovetail joints, old secondary woods like pine or oak on the interior, hand-forged or cast brass hardware, and natural timber ageing.

Such pieces function well as decorative objects on surfaces like sideboards, consoles, or bookshelves, adding tactile warmth and historical texture to contemporary spaces.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity levels, avoiding direct sunlight to prevent veneer fading, and applying occasional microcrystalline wax to nourish the polished wood surface.
