Black Forest Oval Bevelled Mirror, Early 20th Century.

1900 - 1920
Description

Here is a lovely oval Black Forest mirror, intricately carved in fruitwood depicting vine branches, leaves and berries.

The wood is golden in colour and has a rich and warm patina. To the reverse is a makers mark of 'SUt', presumably a continental maker.

The bevelled mirror has the surface wear to be expected of a piece of its age, and the carved wooden frame is in excellent condition. The frame measures 41cm by 30 cm, with the mirror itself measuring 25cm by 19cm.

Please study the photographs, and if there is anything that I can help you with, please don't hesitate to get in touch.

I offer free delivery to mainland UK, and and very happy to arrange quotes for shipping overseas.

This Edwardian Black Forest wall mirror is an early 20th-century piece in the distinctive style associated with the region. The frame is carved from golden fruitwood with a warm patina, incorporating detailed vine leaves, clustered grapes, and twig branch motifs surrounding a bevelled glass plate. The wooden frame is in excellent condition while showing surface wear on the bevelled glass consistent with its age, and a maker mark of SUt appears on the reverse. Measuring 41 cm high and 30 cm wide, the mirror has a compact size that suits display in various residential spaces. It is typically positioned above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living area to bring rustic character and traditional craftsmanship into an interior.

FAQs

Black Forest wood carvings traditionally originate from the Brienz region of Switzerland and are characterised by realistic depictions of nature, flora, fauna, and foliage carved into dense hardwoods such as lindenwood or walnut.

These mirrors typically consist of a solid hand-carved timber frame surrounding a silvered glass mirror plate, which frequently features bevelled edges along its perimeter.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-tool marks, deep relief carving, three-dimensional realism, and natural age-related patination within the recessed areas of the wood carving.

A Black Forest mirror works well as a focal accent above a hallway console, integrated into a gallery wall, or paired with contemporary neutral backdrops to contrast organic carved textures.

Dust the detailed wooden relief regularly using a dry, soft-bristled brush, clean the glass with a lint-free cloth applied directly to the textile rather than spraying the wood, and keep the frame away from direct heat sources.
