The Arts and Crafts movement emerged in the late 19th century as a reaction against industrialisation, promoting hand-crafted design and traditional craftsmanship. The Newlyn Industrial Class, established in Cornwall, trained local fishermen in repousse metalwork, producing distinctive copper items featuring marine, floral, and Celtic motifs.

Newlyn pieces were predominantly crafted from sheet copper using the repousse technique, where designs are hammered and pressed from the reverse side to create raised reliefs on the front. Artisans frequently utilised wooden backers, hand-beaten textures, and riveted construction to finish each functional object.

Authentic pieces often exhibit characteristic hand-hammered textures, local Cornish motifs such as fish, ships, or leaves, and occasionally workshop stamps or artist signatures on the reverse. The copper should display natural oxidation and a warm patina consistent with early 20th-century production rather than modern chemical treatments.

An antique copper mirror adds warmth, texture, and historical contrast to contemporary spaces. Pair it with neutral plaster walls, organic linens, and minimalist joinery to let the metallic tones and hand-crafted details serve as a focal point.

Antique copper should be dusted gently with a soft dry cloth and kept away from excessive moisture and direct sunlight. Avoid aggressive metal polishes or abrasive cleaners, as these strip away the historical patina that contributes significantly to the objects character and value.
