This early 20th century British Colonial plantation chair follows a traditional style suited to warm climates. Constructed from teak, the piece displays a warm brown finish complemented by a woven cane seat and backrest, plus turned front legs and extending flat armrests. Visible details include a small repair on the cane seating, a reclined backrest, and long wooden leg rests. The chair measures 43.5 cm high, 61.5 cm wide, and 183 cm deep when the leg rests are fully extended. In a contemporary home, this large seating option fits comfortably in a sunlit conservatory or a spacious lounge as a distinctive low-slung armchair.

A plantation chair, often called a planters chair, is a reclining lounge chair designed in tropical regions during the 19th and early 20th centuries. It features a woven cane back and seat along with extended, flat wooden armrests intended for resting ones legs.

These chairs were primarily constructed from durable tropical hardwoods such as teak, mahogany, or rosewood to endure warm, humid climates. The seating panel consists of natural woven rattan cane to allow air circulation.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved joinery, turned front legs, flat armrests that pivot or extend, and natural wear to the timber frame. The cane webbing is typically hand-woven through drilled holes along the inside frame rather than glued in as a modern pre-woven sheet.

A plantation chair functions well as an accent seat in a sunroom, library, or living area. Pairing the natural wood tones with botanical textiles, neutral linens, and indoor plants enhances its historical, tropical aesthetic.

Clean the wood frame with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth and apply clear beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the timber. Ensure the woven cane remains hydrated by wiping it lightly with water periodically to prevent brittleness and cracking.
