Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

This Victorian wall mirror dates from the nineteenth century and exemplifies the ornate, decorative aesthetics of the period. Constructed from solid oak, the piece exhibits a rich dark brown timber tone with a hand-finished surface that highlights the natural grain. The heavy wooden frame displays intricate relief work, featuring elaborate acanthus leaf scrolls and floral motifs cascading down both sides. At the apex sits a distinct mascaron carving depicting a classical face mask enclosed within a rounded upper arch. The central glass plate follows a shaped outline, reflecting the elaborate contours of the surrounding woodwork. Measuring 101.6 cm high by 116.8 cm wide and 10.2 cm deep, the mirror rests on a flat rectangular plinth base at the bottom. This statement piece suits placement above a mantelpiece in a traditional living room, drawing attention through its high-relief carvings and dramatic silhouette.

FAQs

19th-century carved mirrors feature organic forms, acanthus leaf scrolling, and figurative mascarons influenced by Renaissance Revival and Art Nouveau movements.

Frames were typically crafted from hardwoods such as oak, walnut, or mahogany, hand-carved by artisans, and fitted with silvered mercury or early float glass plates.

Authentic examples display hand-tool marks on the rear wood backing, natural timber shrinkage near joins, and subtle oxidisation on original mirror glass.

Position the mirror above a minimalist console table or mantelpiece to create a focal point that contrasts sculpted timber with clean architectural lines.

Dust the carvings using a soft bristle brush or microfibre cloth, apply natural beeswax sparingly to the timber, and avoid harsh glass cleaners on original silvering.
