This nineteenth century French Renaissance Revival wall mirror exhibits a dark brown oak construction with a clear glass plate. The architectural frame displays a crisply carved gadrooned cornice above the rectangular glass, complemented by twin double turned and fluted columns flanking each side and resting upon plinth bases. Small brass hanging loops are fitted to the top edge behind the pediment. The timber possesses a warm patina with visible grain and natural colour variations across the polished surfaces. Measuring 115 cm high, 91 cm wide and 10 cm deep, the mirror provides substantial presence while remaining practical for domestic placement. It is suited for suspension above a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room or hallway, contributing classic character to period and traditional interiors.

French Renaissance Revival mirrors originated in late nineteenth-century France, drawing structural inspiration from sixteenth-century classical architecture. These frames typically feature prominent cornices, fluted side columns, pilasters, and carved foliage, reflecting a historicist approach to interior decoration.

Frames were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as oak or walnut, secured with mortise and tenon joinery. The mirror plates were made using silvered sheet glass, occasionally featuring subtle bevelled edges around the perimeter.

Authentic period pieces exhibit hand-carved detail work with minor asymmetry, authentic timber oxidation on the reverse panel, and period-correct iron hanging hardware. The glass plate may also show light foxing or subtle surface inconsistencies consistent with age.

Position the mirror above a contemporary console table or fireplace mantelpiece to create an architectural focal point. Pairing dark, structured timber frames with soft neutral wall paint provides a balanced contrast between historic craftsmanship and modern minimalism.

Remove dust from intricate carvings using a soft-bristled brush or dry microfibre cloth. Apply natural beeswax polish sparingly along the timber grain to nourish the wood, ensuring cleaning agents used on the glass do not contact the frame.
