FAQs

Nineteenth-century French bistro mirrors were originally designed for commercial cafes, brasseries, and bistros to maximise light and create an illusion of greater spatial depth in bustling public interiors.

Authentic period pieces typically feature heavy timber or gesso-coated wooden frames housing silvered mercury glass panels, often backed with protective pine boards and secured with traditional joinery.

Authenticity is identified through genuine foxing, oxidisation, and dark spotting on the glass plate, alongside hand-carved frame details, aged patina, and historic fixings on the reverse.

Positioning a large mirror opposite a window enhances natural daylight, whilst leaning it casually against a wall introduces a relaxed, layered texture that contrasts clean modern lines with historic character.

Preserve fragile silvering and historic patination by dusting gently with a soft microfiber cloth and avoiding harsh chemical cleaning agents or abrasive liquids that might seep behind the glass frame.
