This large wall mirror dates from circa 1900 and follows the Rococo Revival style. It is constructed from timber and gesso with glass and gold leaf, finished in light grey paint with a gilded inner border and an ornate carved Rococo crest at the top, scrollwork embellishments, and minor historic knocks, wear, and touching up to the frame alongside light oxidation on the original mirrored glass. The overall maximum dimensions measure 127 cm high by 85 cm wide by 15 cm deep, while the mirrored glass measures 82 cm high by 55 cm wide. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or bedroom, this piece serves as a functional and decorative wall mirror. It adds period character to a residential interior while providing a practical reflective surface for daily use.

An overmantel mirror is a decorative wall mirror designed specifically to sit or hang directly above a fireplace mantelpiece. Popularised during the 18th and 19th centuries, these pieces feature tailored proportions and elaborate top cresting to complement architectural chimney breasts.

Frames from around 1900 were typically crafted from timber substrates built up with plaster or gesso to form detailed mouldings. Highlights were finished with leaf gilded surfaces, while mirror glass relied on silvering backing techniques.

Original period mirrors exhibit natural ageing to the glass backing, often visible as faint spotting or tarnishing. The frame timber backing, construction joints, and hand-applied gesso detail will show uniform patination and subtle surface wear consistent with age.

Position the mirror centrally above a chimney piece or console table to establish a clear focal point. The pale grey finish and gilded highlights pair naturally with contemporary neutral palettes, bridging modern decor with classic architectural detailing.

Dust the ornate frame gently using a soft, dry feather duster or clean microfibre cloth to prevent damage to fragile gesso. Avoid liquid cleaners, aerosol polish, or abrasive chemicals on the gilded surfaces, and clean the glass separately with a damp cloth.
