This Georgian storage box comes from England and dates to around 1800. It is built in a cubic form from mahogany with a warm brown colour, complemented by decorative boxwood and ebony geometric bandings and an oval shell marquetry inlay of satinwood and pearwood on the front. Additional visible elements include a dark keyhole escutcheon, fine stringing details along the lid and body, and twisted rope-moulded edges framing the top. A metal key protrudes from the bottom front edge. The piece measures 23 cm high, 23.7 cm wide and 20.3 cm deep. It functions well today placed upon a dining room sideboard or a living room console table to store small household items or keepsakes.

Georgian wooden boxes were crafted during the reigns of King George I through King George IV, spanning 1714 to 1830. Characterised by Neoclassical proportions, fine mahogany timbers, shell marquetry, and delicate geometric stringing, these pieces served practical storage roles while displaying refined craftsmanship.

Craftsmen primarily used dense West Indian or Cuban mahogany, often accented with boxwood, satinwood, or ebony for inlays and stringing. Secondary woods inside the casing typically included pine or oak, while keyhole escutcheons were formed from bone, ivory, or cast brass.

Authentic Georgian boxes feature hand-cut dovetail joints, slight unevenness in hand-planed surfaces, and natural shrinkage line variations. Look for original lock mechanisms, aged brass hardware, and authentic patination around handled or high-touch areas.

Place the box on a sideboard, console table, or bookshelf to serve as a functional accent piece. Its dark wood tones and inlaid motifs contrast well against modern neutral backdrops, painted cabinetry, or contemporary ceramics.

Dust the surface regularly with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to nourish the wood. Keep the piece away from direct sunlight, radiators, and areas with fluctuating humidity to prevent veneer lifting or timber warping.
