FAQs

Smokers bow chairs, also known as provincial Windsor armchairs, originated in 19th-century England as sturdy, comfortable seating commonly found in public houses, smoking rooms, and offices.

These chairs are traditionally constructed using a combination of native timbers, typically featuring a solid elm or beech seat, ash or birch spindles, and bentwood armbows.

Authentic pieces exhibit period construction methods such as wedged through-tennong joints, adzed solid wood seats, natural patination, and hand-turned spindle components.

Pair the chair with a minimalist modern desk for a contrasting workspace, or place it in a living area as an accent seat to introduce organic warmth and historical character.

Maintain the wood by avoiding direct sunlight and heat sources, dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth, and occasionally applying a traditional beeswax polish to nourish the grain.
