FAQs

Tunbridge Ware is a distinct type of wooden ornamentation, typically taking the form of boxes and small accessories, decorated with characteristic mosaic woodwork produced in Tunbridge Wells, England, during the 18th and 19th centuries.

These pieces are constructed from a variety of native and foreign timbers, such as walnut, mahogany, beech, and holly, which are arranged in thousands of tiny, precisely cut blocks to form pictorial or geometric mosaics.

Authentic items are recognised by their exceptionally fine mosaic banding, often utilising hundreds of individually shaped wooden segments without paint, and occasionally featuring original maker labels or characteristic form.

Such decorative items add texture and historical interest when placed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or console table, serving as a focal point among contemporary furnishings.

Maintain stable indoor humidity levels, keep out of direct sunlight to prevent timber fading, and dust gently with a dry, soft cloth without applying modern liquid polishes or waxes.
