Early Victorian Flame Mahogany Tea Caddy

19th century
Description

An early Victorian tea caddy dating from c1845 veneered in beautiful flame mahogany with a cross-banded satinwood border to the top edged with ebony stringing. Inside are two lidded compartments, each with a little ebony knob. The inside of the lid is lined in a pale blue paper.

The simple shape of this tea caddy allows the beautiful flame mahogany to shine. It is very lovely timber - the photos don’t really do it justice!

Condition: The tea caddy has a couple of marks and losses, which are shown in the photos, mainly a few small chips around the corners, though there is a larger blemish on one side. The lock doesn’t have an escutcheon. The inside is in good original condition.

This early Victorian tea caddy dates from approximately 1845 and belongs to the Victorian style. The piece takes the form of a rectangular box veneered in warm brown flame mahogany, finished with a crossbanded border on the top lid, dark inlaid stringing, and a central metal keyhole escutcheon. Visible signs of age include a few small chips around the corners and a noticeable blemish on the right-hand side panel. The caddy measures 12.2 cm high, 23 cm wide, and 13.4 cm deep. Positioned on top of a sideboard in an English country house interior, this tea caddy serves as a decorative tabletop accessory. The compact rectangular volume suits display surfaces in living rooms, hallways, or dining spaces, holding small everyday items or remaining empty as a traditional period accent piece.

Tea caddies were lockable containers introduced in 18th and 19th-century households to securely store expensive imported tea leaves under lock and key.

These boxes were predominantly constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, featuring decorative timber veneers, crossbanded borders, and internal metal linings.

Authentic period pieces display hand-cut joinery, genuine flame mahogany veneers, original lock escutcheons, and natural surface patination accumulated through age.

A tea caddy serves as a decorative tabletop accent on a sideboard, bookshelf, or console, and can also be used for storing contemporary trinkets or keepsakes.

Position the caddy away from direct heat and sunlight to avoid veneer shrinkage, dust regularly using a soft cloth, and apply natural beeswax sparingly to maintain the polish.
