This late Victorian pier mirror belongs to the Victorian Rococo Revival style, dating to 1890. The tall frame is constructed from giltwood and gesso, finished in a bright gold colour with a reflective mirror glass plate. Detailed craftsmanship is evident in the ornate decoration, which includes elaborate acanthus leaf carvings, flowing foliate scrolls along the sides, a cartouche pediment with a crested finial at the arched top, and a shell motif at the base. The measurements are 86 cm high, 43 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for domestic settings today, this mirror fits well in a narrow wall space in an entrance hall, above a console table in a sitting room, or on a bedroom wall. The vertical orientation helps reflect natural light and enhances spatial depth in compact rooms. The classic French Chateau design vibe integrates smoothly with traditional or eclectic interior schemes, adding a decorative focal point to plain wall surfaces.

A pier mirror is a tall, narrow mirror designed to be placed on the wall space between two windows, known as a pier. Popularised during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, these mirrors were used to reflect ambient light into rooms and add architectural visual height.

Victorian gilt frames were typically constructed using a timber core moulded with gesso, a plaster-like material used to create intricate floral and scrolled detailing. The surface was then finished with gold leaf application, paired with heavy plate mirror glass.

Authentic pieces often exhibit fine cracking in the gesso surface, known as craquelure, alongside natural wear where the red or grey clay bole undercoating shows through the gold leaf. The reverse typically features hand-cut wooden backing boards and original iron fixings.

In modern interiors, a tall gilt mirror can be placed above a minimalist hallway console table or mounted on a narrow accent wall to create visual contrast. The gold tone complements both neutral paint palettes and deep, bold wall colours.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned exclusively with a soft, dry camel-hair brush or duster to prevent lifting delicate gold leaf. Water and chemical cleaners must be avoided on the frame, while glass cleaner should be applied sparingly to a cloth rather than directly onto the mirror surface.
