Windsor chairs originated in rural England during the early 18th century, evolving from vernacular woodworking traditions where individual components like legs and spindles were turned on a pole lathe and fitted into a solid wooden seat.

Authentic chairs typically feature a combination of native timbers, utilising resilient yew, ash, or elm for the bentwood bows and spindles, paired with a sculpted elm seat and sturdy turned underframing.

Identification relies on examining tool marks, timber shrinkage, peg construction, and hand-carved details on the saddle seat, which reveal the subtle irregularities characteristic of 18th and 19th-century craftsmanship.

This seating piece functions effectively as an accent chair within a modern living space or paired around a contemporary dining table to introduce warmth, historic texture, and sculptural organic form.

Preservation requires maintaining stable indoor humidity levels away from direct heat sources and sunlight, coupled with occasional applications of microcrystalline wax to nourish and protect the aged wooden surface.
