Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE VICTORIAN ERA:
Steel comb and brass bedplate: Swiss cylinder mechanism of nineteenth-century manufacture.
Tune sheet lists airs from the 1890s: shows period of pinning and circulation.
Original key-wind aperture and side compartment: earlier mechanical format retaining its winding key.
Natural wood shrinkage and light surface marks: age and domestic use.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian music box is a nineteenth-century rosewood casing enclosing a brass cylinder mechanism, steel comb, and a winding key positioned on the left side. The warm brown timber features fine line inlay framing the top of the lid and the front of the body, alongside a printed paper tune card glued to the interior of the lid and bright brass hinges joining the components. Signs of age include yellowing and edge wear on the paper tune sheet. Measuring 12.5 cm high, 46 cm wide, and 15 cm deep, the compact case sits neatly on a sideboard top in a gentleman's library or study. Place this mechanical instrument upon a flat surface in a living room, hallway, or study to enjoy the sound of the six airs when wound with the included key. The hinged lid opens to reveal the internal brass workings while protecting the paper tune sheet under glass or card when closed. The traditional proportions allow for easy placement alongside books or decorative items in a period interior, bringing traditional mechanical sound and Victorian craftsmanship into domestic use today.

A cylinder music box is an automatic mechanical musical instrument developed in Switzerland during the 19th century that generates sound when pins on a revolving metal cylinder pluck tuned steel teeth on a comb.

These instruments feature clockwork mechanisms made from brass and steel, mounted on cast iron bedplates and housed inside timber cases crafted from rosewood, mahogany, or walnut.

Authentic examples feature hand-set brass pins on the cylinder, finely machined steel combs, maker serial numbers stamped onto the movement, and paper tune cards affixed to the interior lid.

Position the timber case on a console table, sideboard, or study desk where the wood inlay and mechanical details can be displayed alongside books or classic table lamps.

Keep the object in a climate-controlled room away from moisture and heat sources, avoid over-winding the spring motor, and gently clean the wooden case with natural wax polish.
