This Victorian music box is a wooden instrument housed in a warm brown rosewood case with a glass dust cover and an ebonised interior lid. The piece stands on moulded feet and includes a polished brass cylinder, steel comb, keyhole escutcheon, and a small hanging tassel on the front. Measuring 15 cm high, 57 cm wide, and 23 cm deep, the unit fits neatly upon a sideboard top within a gentleman's library or a living room. The exterior displays a natural timber grain with visible circular lock escutcheons below the lid edge. Designed for domestic entertainment, the movement plays ten airs operated by internal levers. The interior mechanisms are protected beneath the clear glass panel, while the reflective black lid lifts upwards to open the box. The light brown wooden structure features clean horizontal moulding along the base and traditional cabinetry joints. Placed in a reception room or study, the antique operates as a decorative focal point as well as a mechanical musical instrument.

Popularised in the nineteenth century, Swiss cylinder music boxes are mechanical instruments that play tunes using a revolving brass cylinder fitted with pins that pluck the steel teeth of a comb.

These pieces generally feature wooden cases crafted from walnut, rosewood, or fruitwood, housing a cast-iron bedplate, a brass pinned cylinder, a steel comb, and an internal glass dust lid.

Authentic examples display original brass mechanical components, a multi-tune index sheet attached under the lid, finely cut steel comb teeth, and period-correct case joinery.

Place the music box as a tactile decorative object on a sideboard, console table, or library shelf, allowing the natural timber tones to complement modern books and ceramics.

Keep the instrument away from direct sunlight and humidity fluctuations, clean the wooden case with natural beeswax polish, and avoid over-winding the spring mechanism.
