Nineteenth-century French mirrors frequently drew inspiration from earlier classical periods such as Louis XIV, Louis XV, and Neo-Classical styles, characterised by elaborate hand-carved motifs and symmetrical architectural proportions.

These pieces were typically constructed from hand-carved softwood or hardwood frames, finished with multiple layers of gesso and paint, and fitted with mercury or early silvered float glass plates secured with wooden backboards.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved detailing with natural irregularities, oxidised silvering or foxing on the glass plate, layered gesso showing appropriate age-related cracking, and traditional joinery on the reverse timber frame.

An antique mirror serves as a striking focal point when hung above a mantelpiece or leaned casually against a plain wall to create contrast between historical ornamentation and minimalist modern decor.

Preserve the finish by keeping the piece away from direct sunlight and high humidity, dusting gently with a soft dry cloth, and avoiding chemical cleaners on both the painted gesso frame and the fragile aged mirror glass.
