This pair of Victorian satin birch pedestals dates from 1870. Each piece is finished in a warm honey hue with a distinctive flame figure grain across the timber, complemented by a moulded edge to the top and a configuration of four stacked drawers fitted with small wooden knob handles. Carved pillars with foliate designs and fluting run down either side, while turned and tapered feet rest on brass and white porcelain castors. Measuring 80 cm high, 50 cm wide, and 46 cm deep, these compact chests suit versatile placement as bedside tables or lamp tables within an English Country House interior. Their small scale and multi-drawer storage make them practical surfaces for a bedroom or living space today.

FAQs

Satin birch pedestals are small timber storage cabinets featuring multiple drawers, originally designed in the nineteenth century to stand beside beds or larger bedroom furniture suites.

Victorian pedestals were frequently constructed from hardwoods such as satin birch, mahogany, or walnut, featuring dovetail drawer joints, turned columns, and brass or ceramic castors.

Authentic nineteenth century pieces display hand-cut dovetail joints, natural chatoyancy in the wood grain, period drawer linings, and hand-turned column details.

These versatile small chests can serve as nightstands flanking a bed, accent side tables beside living room seating, or compact storage in a home office.

Maintain satin birch by dusting regularly with a soft cloth and applying a natural beeswax polish twice yearly, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and moisture.
