This late nineteenth-century Regency style cheval mirror is constructed from mahogany with a dark brown timber finish and fitted with an adjustable glass plate. The oblong mirror has a cross-veneer frame suspended between square, fluted upright supports with a turned cross stretcher. The assembly stands on downswept, reeded front legs and unreeded back legs, all terminating in brass square cap castors. Visible details include reeded splayed legs, brass castors, and an adjustable pivot frame. Measuring 160.02 cm high, 82.55 cm wide, and 71.12 cm deep, the standing mirror functions as a dressing accessory in a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway.

A Regency style cheval mirror is a freestanding, full-length dressing mirror supported by vertical upright posts and splayed legs. The design originated in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, featuring neoclassical proportions, fluted ornamentation, and adjustable swivel mechanisms.

Traditional cheval mirrors are constructed primarily from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut, often enhanced with flame mahogany veneers. The mirror plates were historically silvered glass, while structural joinery utilized brass pivot screws, stretcher bars, and castors for mobility.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut joinery, period-appropriate brass castors, and original tilt-adjuster fittings along the stiles. Inspection of the reverse frame often reveals period backboards and natural oxidisation on older silvered mirror glass.

Position a cheval mirror in a dressing room, bedroom corner, or wide hallway to maximize light reflection and create visual depth. The rich wood tones contrast effectively against modern muted paint palettes and contemporary neutral textiles.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally along the grain. Clean the mirror glass using a specialized glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly to prevent moisture damage to the wooden frame.
