This large 19th-century Victorian overmantel mirror is made from giltwood, gesso and glass with a warm gold finish. The archtop frame displays a moulded profile, fluted detailing, rounded top corners and a flat base supported by small turned corner terminals. Measuring 143 cm high by 154 cm wide and 6 cm deep, the piece offers grand proportions suited for placement above a mantel in a traditional English country house interior. Positioned above a fireplace in a living room, dining room or grand hallway, the mirror reflects light and opens up the surrounding space. The classical archtop design and gilded finish coordinate well with both period furnishings and contemporary room schemes, providing a practical and decorative focal point on a chimney breast.

Overmantel mirrors gained widespread popularity in the 18th and 19th centuries, designed specifically to sit directly above fireplace mantels to bounce natural daylight and candlelight throughout high-ceilinged reception rooms.

Period frames were predominantly constructed from carved timber coated with layers of chalky gesso, finished with hand-applied gold leaf gilding, and fitted with silvered plate glass panels.

Authentic period pieces often feature red or grey bole paint showing through worn areas of gilding, hand-cut wood backing panels, square-headed iron tacks, and natural oxidation speckling on the mirror glass.

Position the flat base resting squarely on a chimneypiece mantel or secure it directly to a wall above a hallway console table to anchor the space and enhance light reflection.

Dust the frame lightly using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or feather duster, avoiding moisture, liquid polish, or chemical sprays that can dissolve historic gesso and strip away delicate gold leafing.
