Victorian Mahogany Framed Button Back Armchair

19th century
Description

A good example of a Victorian armchair dating from the mid to late 19th Century. It has a nice shape with a partly exposed mahogany frame, beautiful scrolling arms and carved cabriole legs with brass castors below.

It is a good quality piece and very solidly made. The chair has been upholstered relatively recently in a good quality woven fabric with a matching braid edge. It has a deep buttoned back and the fabric compliments the chair nicely.

The chair is in very good condition for its age and is strong and sturdy. There are a few minor marks and some light wear on the upholstery but nothing detrimental and the frame is solid. There are some general signs of age and use around the frame and legs but no major damages and it displays beautifully.

The best description comes from the photos so please look at them all carefully and if you have any questions just ask.

This Victorian armchair dates from the mid to late 19th Century and has a partially exposed mahogany frame in a dark brown timber colour. The upholstered surfaces are covered in a pink woven fabric decorated with a matching braid edge along the seams and edges. The high backrest features a deep buttoned design, while the front comprises scrolled arms, carved cabriole legs, and brass castors at the base. Minor marks and light wear are visible on the upholstery alongside general signs of age and use across the wooden frame. Measuring 99 cm high, 74 cm wide, and 89 cm deep, the armchair offers a solid and sturdy seat for everyday use in a sitting room, library, or study. The traditional English Country House design suits both period and eclectic interiors, providing a comfortable seating option beside a fireplace or reading nook.

Victorian button-back armchairs emerged in mid-19th century Britain, characterised by deep-tufted upholstery anchored with covered buttons, exposed show-wood timber frames, and comfortable, rounded profiles designed for domestic drawing rooms.

These armchairs were typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut for the exposed frame. Internal construction relied on beech framing, coil springs, horsehair padding, and heavy jute webbing.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-carved details on the frame and legs, brass castors, original joinery such as dovetail or mortise and tenon joints, and dark, patinated wood finishes consistent with 19th-century manufacturing.

A Victorian armchair can serve as a focal point in a contemporary living room, library, or bedroom suite, paired with neutral modern textiles or minimalist side tables to balance period ornamentation.

Keep the timber frame clean by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax occasionally to maintain the finish. Vacuum the upholstery using a soft brush attachment and position the chair away from direct sunlight to prevent fabric fading.
