Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 19TH CENTURY:
Gilding worn away on the high edges: long handling over many decades.
Wood movement at the leg joints: natural drying out over time.
Pierced shell and scroll cresting: high Victorian revival of earlier French styles.
Painted and parcel-gilt finish: classic finish for northern European salon seating.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of nineteenth century Rococo Revival side chairs brings French Chateau elegance to a home. Each chair has a carved cream and parcel gilt painted wooden frame, accented with a richly detailed floral damask fabric upholstery in pale green and cream tones. The design includes a deeply carved cresting rail at the top and elegant cabriole legs. Visible details include intricate gold scrolling work along the frame, distressed whitewash paint finish showing gentle wear, and patterned damask textile covering both the tall rectangular backrest and the padded seat. The dimensions measure 108 cm high, 53 cm wide, and 60 cm deep. These decorative seating pieces work well placed around a formal dining table, positioned against a living room wall, or used as statement accent chairs in a bedroom or hallway.

Rococo Revival seating, prominent in the mid-nineteenth century, features elaborate scrollwork, carved floral motifs, cabriole legs, and asymmetric ornament. Frames often display painted finishes combined with gilding to emphasize structural contours and decorative carvings.

Carved hardwoods such as beech, walnut, or lime wood formed the structural frame. Surface finishes involved gesso groundwork followed by oil or water gilding alongside painted layers, while upholstery utilized horsehair padding covered in woven silk or wool damask.

Authentic period chairs typically feature hand-carved joinery, wooden peg construction, evidence of natural wear along lower leg stretchers, and traditional gesso layers beneath chipped paint or gilding rather than modern acrylic finishes.

Pairs of decorative side chairs can be positioned to flank a hall table, styled beside a fireplace alcove, or used as accent seating in a bedroom. Combining detailed antique frames with contemporary wall art provides visual contrast in modern settings.

Frames should be dusted gently using a soft dry brush to avoid lifting delicate gold leaf or loose paint layers. Fabrics require light vacuuming with an upholstery attachment, avoiding liquid cleansers that might discolour historic damask or alter timber finishes.
