Antique Chippendale Style Mahogany Display Cabinet | Bow Front

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century Chippendale style display cabinet in mahogany, a handsome and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship and classic Georgian-inspired design.

The bow front has a pair of glazed doors with elegant lancet-arched astragal glazing bars, opening with a key to an interior with two shelves over a base shelf, lined throughout in a pale patterned fabric. The sides are also glazed, letting plenty of light reach the display.

The top has a carved gadrooned edge and a low shaped ledge back centred by a pierced double scroll, and the cabinet stands on four cabriole legs with carved shell knees ending in bold ball and claw feet.

The mahogany displays an attractive grain and a warm, rich colour with a lovely mellow patina.

Presented in good condition commensurate with age. A very desirable mahogany display cabinet, a perfect addition to any dining room or living room for showing off china, glass and collectables.

This early 20th century Chippendale style display cabinet is made from dark brown mahogany and glass. The bow front contains two glazed doors with Gothic astragal glazing bars and lancet-arched details, alongside glazed sides, and the interior is lined with a pale patterned fabric. The top features a carved gadrooned edge and a low shaped ledge back with a pierced double scroll, while the base rests on four cabriole legs with carved shell knees and bold ball and claw feet. The entire structure measures 131 cm high, 123 cm wide, and 35.5 cm deep. Position this cabinet in a dining room or living room to exhibit china, glassware, and collectables. The glass panels on the front and sides allow ample light to illuminate the interior shelves, creating an ideal display space for treasured objects while adding a classic Georgian-inspired presence to the room.

Chippendale style display cabinets draw inspiration from 18th-century cabinetmaking designs, typically featuring mahogany timber, intricate astragal glazing bars, and ornate decorative elements such as cabriole legs ending in ball-and-claw feet.

Traditional cabinets of this design were constructed primarily from solid mahogany or mahogany veneers, fitted with hand-cut glass panels, interior shelving, and fabric lining designed to highlight displayed items.

Authentic period construction features hand-carved details on the legs and moulding, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, subtle variations in hand-blown glass panes, and historical wear patterns near lock plates and hinges.

Positioning a mahogany cabinet against neutral backdrop colours allows the rich wood tones to stand out, while filling the interior with modern ceramics or glassware creates a balanced visual contrast between contemporary and traditional design.

Apply high-quality beeswax sparingly along the grain of the wood, dust regularly with a clean lint-free cloth, and position the cabinet away from direct sunlight and central heating radiators to prevent drying or discolouration.
