Antique Chippendale Style Mahogany Display Cabinet | Claw Feet

1900 - 1920
For Sale by ActFurniture LTD
Description

Antique early 20th century glazed display cabinet in mahogany, made in the Chippendale Revival manner, an elegant and well-proportioned piece of good quality, showcasing fine craftsmanship.

It is enclosed by a pair of astragal glazed doors with Gothic arched tracery, and has glazed sides, allowing the contents to be seen from every angle. The doors open with a key to reveal a lined interior fitted with two glass shelves, perfect for displaying china, glassware and collectables.

The top is finished with a gadrooned edge and a shaped arched back upstand centred by a carved shell, above a figured mahogany frieze with crossbanding to the door surrounds. It stands on four elegant cabriole legs ending in carved ball and claw feet.

The mahogany displays a lovely flame-figured grain and a warm, rich colour with a pleasing aged patina.

Presented in good condition, a very desirable and decorative piece, perfect addition to any dining room, living room or hallway.

This antique Chippendale style display cabinet originates from 1920 and follows the Chippendale Revival manner. Constructed from mahogany with glass panels, the dark brown cabinet displays a rich timber colour, a carved shell motif on the shaped arched back upstand, and ball and claw feet on cabriole legs. Additional details visible include a gadrooned edge, astragal glazing with Gothic arched tracery, crossbanding, and a lined interior with glass shelves. Measuring 142 cm high, 122 cm wide, and 36 cm deep, the unit stands upright on the floor. Suitable for a dining room, living room, or hallway, the cabinet functions as a storage and display unit for china, glassware, and collectables. The glazed doors and sides permit viewing from multiple angles, while the interior accommodates displayed items across multiple tiers. The piece integrates into traditional interior schemes, providing functional display space without occupying excessive floor area.

Originating in the eighteenth century from cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale, this style incorporates Mid-Georgian, Gothic, and Chinese influences, featuring cabriole legs, carved detailing, and rich hardwoods such as mahogany.

Traditional display cabinets are constructed primarily from solid mahogany or walnut, featuring glazed door panels, hand-carved astragal glazing bars, and fabric or timber lined interiors.

Look for characteristic design elements such as hand-carved ball and claw feet, intricate astragal glazing patterns, mahogany veneers, and hand-cut joinery on the timber frame.

Position the cabinet against a plain or painted feature wall to create visual balance, using the glazed interior shelves to store ceramics, glassware, or curated books.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply beeswax polish annually along the timber grain, and place the cabinet away from direct sunlight and radiators to avoid wood movement or discolouration.
