This nineteenth-century French Louis XVI style trumeau mirror measures 210 cm high and 129 cm wide. The rectangular piece combines painted wood and glass with giltwood elements, presenting a grey body finished with a painted glaze alongside gold gilding. An egg and dart frieze runs along the top, accompanied by a reeded surround and a carved cresting featuring floral swags. The large cartouche on the upper panel includes a central roundel flanked by scrolled foliage, while the lower section houses a replacement mirror glass plate within a gilded frame. Signs of old woodworm appear on the rear, treated recently, and the body carries a recently repainted surface designed with a faded look. Suitable for placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room, or hallway, this wall mirror hangs securely against a vertical surface to reflect interior spaces. The architectural proportions and classic French chateau design integrate smoothly into traditional or formal interior schemes as a decorative architectural element.

FAQs

A trumeau mirror originates from 18th-century France and features a mirror plate surmounted by a decorative wood or canvas panel within a single unified frame. Originally built into the panelling above mantels or between windows, these pieces combine reflective glass with sculpted, carved, or painted artistic elements.

19th-century trumeau mirrors were typically crafted with pine or oak backing panels, hand-carved wood or applied gesso decorative elements, and hand-gilded metal leaf finishes. The painted areas utilised milk paints or distemper coatings over smooth gesso layers.

Authentic Louis XVI style trumeau mirrors feature neoclassical decorative motifs such as ribbon knots, floral swags, egg-and-dart mouldings, and symmetrical cartouches. Look for hand-carved joinery on the wooden backboards, natural silver oxidisation on the glass plate, and layered oil gilding over red or yellow bole.

Designers frequently position tall trumeau mirrors directly above a fireplace mantel or grounding console table to draw the eye upwards and add architectural height. The muted painted finish creates a soft contrast against modern painted walls, while the gilded details introduce warmth.

Dust giltwood mouldings lightly using a dry, soft-bristle brush, avoiding liquid cleaners which can dissolve water gilding or lift antique gesso. Clean mirror glass by spraying glass cleaner directly onto a microfibre cloth rather than onto the glass surface itself to prevent liquid seeping behind the frame.
