Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Maker's label for H. Chapman & Co.: active Newcastle makers in this period.
Stylised carved fruit and leaves: decorative work combining revival forms with newer design.
Quarter-sawn oak: silvery medullary rays visible across the splats and front rails.
Stamped assembly numbers on seat frames: standard practice in early 20th-century workshops.
Screwed corner braces underneath: robust cabinet construction keeping the seat frame square.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

This set of eight solid oak dining chairs dates from the 1920s and follows the Queen Anne revival style. The golden brown timber has a warm polish finish, complemented by drop-in seats upholstered in patterned blue fabric. Each chair displays cabriole legs ending in pad or claw feet, carved leaf motifs on the knees, and vasiform splats with carved botanical back decoration. The solid construction provides firm and comfortable seating. Measuring 99 cm high, 52 cm wide, and 50 cm deep with a 46 cm seating height, these chairs are suited for placement around a dining table in a traditional or country house interior setting.

Queen Anne Revival furniture emerged in the late nineteenth century, borrowing elements from early eighteenth-century English design. Typical features include high vasiform back splats, elegant s-curves, carved knees, and cabriole front legs ending in pad or claw feet.

These chairs were primarily crafted from native hardwoods such as solid English oak or mahogany. Seats were typically designed with removable drop-in wooden frames upholstered in woven damask, brocade, or leather.

Look for hand-carved detailing along the splat and leg knees, solid mortise and tenon joinery, and genuine quarter-sawn oak grain patterns. Removable drop-in seat frames and subtle variations in hand-carved motifs also indicate period craftsmanship.

Pair a set of carved oak chairs with a clean-lined rectangular dining table in contrasting timber or stone to balance classic and modern elements. Incorporating contemporary lighting and minimalist table accessories helps integrate traditional seating into modern dining spaces.

Dust timber surfaces regularly with a soft cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to protect the oak grain. Vacuum upholstery gently using a soft brush attachment and address fabric spills immediately with clean blotting cloths.
