This tall 18th century French chateau trumeau mirror brings authentic period character to a home. Constructed from wood, canvas, mirror glass, paint and gesso, it displays a sage green finish with a cream contrast and a gilded inner border along its dual-panel frame. The arched top moulding frames an oil landscape painting depicting classical ruins, positioned above a rectangular mirror glass panel with mercury plate and foxing. Visible details include an arched top, decorative moulding, and hand-painted figures within the landscape scene. Measuring 175 cm high, 59 cm wide and 3 cm deep, the vertical proportions suit placement above the mantel in a living room, dining room or hallway.

Originating in 18th-century France, a trumeau mirror is a tall wall mirror that incorporates a decorative oil painting or carved wooden panel positioned above a lower glass mirror plate within a single unified frame.

Traditional trumeau mirrors were constructed with solid wood frames, often finished in soft oil paint, gesso, or leaf gilding, and featured hand-painted oil on canvas panels set above silvered mirror glass.

Authentic period examples display signs of aging such as natural craquelure on the painted canvas, gentle oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-cut timber joinery along the rear frame construction.

Positioning a trumeau mirror above a fireplace mantel or console table draws the eye upward, adding architectural scale, classical art, and reflected light to contemporary spaces.

Maintain the piece by dusting the frame and canvas lightly with a dry, soft brush, while keeping the mirror glass clean using a slightly dampened microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners near painted surfaces.
