FAQs

Rococo style wall mirrors are defined by ornate carved detailing, asymmetrical curves, floral motifs, and shell-like rocaille decorations. Originating in 18th-century France, these frames were crafted to capture and reflect light in elegant grand reception rooms.

Traditional giltwood mirrors were constructed using hand-carved softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with layers of gesso and red clay bole. Fine gold leaf was then water-gilded onto the surface and burnished, surrounding hand-blown or early plate glass.

Authentic period giltwood mirrors typically show signs of wear where the underlying red bole ground peeks through the gold leaf. The reverse side usually features hand-planed timber backboards, original square-cut nails, and natural oxidisation on the mirror glass.

Interior designers often place intricate giltwood mirrors against dark matte walls to accentuate the metallic finish. They serve as a focal point above a contemporary console table or within a minimalist hallway to introduce texture and historical contrast.

Giltwood frames should only be dusted gently with a soft dry artist brush or feather duster. Water and chemical liquid cleaners must be avoided, as moisture can dissolve the water-gesso binder and loosen the delicate gold leaf layer.
