An 18th-century Italian wall mirror in a Neoclassical style, executed in carved and giltwood with gesso and glass materials, presents a gold finish paired with original green painted decoration. The piece incorporates an arched rectangular mirror plate within an intertwined and scrolling foliate border, an openwork crest centred by a classical urn with trailing foliage, and two fluted feet at the base, displaying naturally aged gilding, attractive foxing across the old glass, and untouched surface wear throughout. Measuring 140 cm in height, 68 cm in width, and 6 cm in depth, this decorative wall accessory mounts in a domestic interior such as above a sideboard.

Eighteenth-century Italian giltwood mirrors are characterised by hand-carved wooden frames coated in gesso and decorated with thin gold leaf. Reflecting Neoclassical and Rococo influences, these pieces feature classical urns, foliate scrolls, and architectural cresting designed to accentuate light within grand interior spaces.

Traditional giltwood frames were carved from softwoods such as pine or lime, coated with multiple layers of chalk-based gesso, and painted with a clay bole layer. Very thin sheets of gold leaf were subsequently applied using water or oil gilding techniques before being burnished.

Authentic 18th-century pieces exhibit hand-sawing and chisel marks on the reverse timber backing boards, along with original glass showing subtle oxidation or mercury foxing. The gilding often demonstrates natural surface wear, revealing the reddish or dark clay bole beneath the gold leaf.

Positioning a carved giltwood mirror above a streamlined console table or chimneypiece creates a structural contrast between historical craftsmanship and modern lines. Hanging the piece opposite a natural light source maximises illumination while establishing a focal architectural feature.

Giltwood surfaces should be dusted lightly using a soft dry brush, avoiding water, liquid detergents, or chemical polishes that dissolve gesso and strip gold leaf. The glass plate should be cleaned cautiously with a lightly dampened cloth, ensuring no moisture contacts the gilded edge.
