In 18th-century Britain, dry tea leaves were an expensive luxury, prompting the creation of lockable containers to secure the contents. These caddies served both functional storage purposes and as decorative status symbols displayed in grand reception rooms.

Craftsmen constructed these items using wooden carcasses covered in fine veneers such as mahogany, satinwood, or tortoiseshell. Additional decorative accents included silver escutcheons, ivory or bone borders, and silver feet.

Authentic 18th-century examples feature period-appropriate lock mechanisms, hand-engraved metal plates, natural organic variations in the shell veneer, and traditional hand-cut joinery on the inner carcass.

Small antique boxes can be styled atop a console table, sideboard, or bookshelf. Placing the item alongside modern ceramics, framed artwork, or marble surfaces provides rich tactile and historic contrast.

Keep tortoiseshell items away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and excessive humidity to prevent the shell from drying out or lifting from the timber base. Dust gently using a clean microfibre cloth and avoid harsh chemical polishes.
