This set of four Georgian dining chairs belongs to the Hepplewhite period around 1780. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with marquetry inlay, the chairs display carved shield-shaped backs incorporating wheat sheaf motifs, fluted legs joined by H-stretchers, and newly re-covered light green upholstered seats showing minor historic repairs. Individual chairs measure 94 cm in height with a 46 cm seat height, 54 cm in width, and 43 cm in depth. Suitable for everyday dining use in a home, these seats complement traditional English country house interiors around a dining table. The classic proportions provide comfortable seating while maintaining period character for formal dining spaces or reception rooms.

Hepplewhite style furniture originated in England during the late 18th century, named after cabinetmaker George Hepplewhite. It is defined by Neoclassical restraint, featuring graceful light lines, shield-shaped or oval backs, slender straight tapered legs, and subtle carved or inlaid decorations.

Primary construction predominantly utilised dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany due to its fine grain and strength. Upholstery was originally executed in silk, damask, or horsehair, secured with brass brass-headed studs over webbed wooden seat frames.

Authentic period chairs display hand-cut mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved backrest details like wheat sheaves or lyres, and evidence of hand-planing on untrimmed areas. The proportions remain balanced yet slender, with timber exhibiting natural age patina and shrinkage around frame joints.

Incorporate period mahogany chairs around a clean-lined modern or minimalist dining table to create visual contrast. They can also serve individually or in pairs as accent seating in a formal hallway, study, or bedroom setting.

Dust the timber framework regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply high-grade beeswax once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the chairs away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to avoid timber movement, joint loosening, and fabric fading.
