Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1800s:
Cabriole front legs with pad feet: regional Thames Valley pattern from this period.
Elm saddle seat with natural shrinkage at the front: timber moving over centuries.
Warm reddish colour and tight grain on the spindles: English yew wood.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

A comb back Windsor chair features an upper back rail supported by vertical spindles, resembling the teeth of a comb, set above an extended armrest structure.

Thames Valley Windsor chairs were commonly constructed using regional hardwoods, predominantly yewwood for the steam-bent elements and spindles, alongside solid elm for the carved saddle seat.

Authentic 19th-century Windsor chairs feature hand-shaped solid seats with saddle contouring, wedged tenon joinery penetrating the seat, and natural patination across contact surfaces.

Position a Windsor chair as a focal accent in an entryway, alongside minimalist contemporary furniture, or paired with textured linen cushions to balance historic woodworking with modern aesthetics.

Preserve yewwood furniture by dusting with a lint-free cloth, applying clear beeswax annually to retain moisture, and keeping the piece clear of direct heat sources or damp environments.
