This Georgian oak corner armchair dates from around 1780 and embodies an English Country House style. The timber displays a dark brown finish with a rich grain, complemented by a drop-in seat covered in a tapestry woolwork fabric patterned in red, yellow, and beige. The construction includes a curved horseshoe armrest with large flat terminals, supported by three crisply turned columns and two attractively pierced splats beneath a shaped backrest. It stands on two turned legs at the sides and rear, paired with a central cabriole front leg terminating in a pad foot. The chair measures 81.5 cm high, 78.5 cm wide, and 66 cm deep. Practical for placement in a home today, this corner armchair provides a functional seating option in a living room, hallway, or study. The wide arm terminals offer convenient surfaces for holding small items, while the compact corner design allows it to fit neatly into unused angles of a room. The surface has been cleaned and waxed in workshops, preserving the original colour and grain of the oak while maintaining the structural integrity of the piece.

A Georgian corner armchair, also known as a writing or desk chair, was designed in the 18th century with a diagonal seat configuration that allowed the user to sit comfortably while writing or reading.

These chairs were primarily constructed from solid hardwoods such as English oak, mahogany, or walnut, featuring mortise and tenon joinery alongside drop-in upholstered seats.

Authentic pieces typically display hand-cut joinery, irregular wear on the underside, original wooden peg construction, and a single cabriole or turned leg situated centrally at the front corner.

A Georgian corner chair functions well positioned beside a desk, in a dedicated study corner, or as an accent piece within a traditional hallway or living room layout.

Historic oak furniture should be kept away from direct heat sources and polished periodically with a high-quality beeswax polish applied with a soft cotton cloth.
