This Regency side chair dates to around 1820 and is an English country house piece constructed from wood with a woven rush seat and an ochre painted finish. The frame displays faux-bamboo turning, a turned double-rail spindle backrest, and hand-painted line decorations alongside star motifs near the top of the front legs. Signs of age include surface wear and chipping to the original paintwork across the framework. The seat height measures 45 cm, with overall dimensions of 88 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 40 cm deep. Practical for everyday seating, the chair functions well placed around a dining table, positioned at a desk, or used as an accent piece in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The compact proportions allow it to fit easily into smaller spaces while providing a sturdy and functional seat for daily use.

Painted country side chairs originated in the 18th and 19th centuries as regional craftspeople produced lightweight seating using local hardwoods, often painted to simulate costlier timber or decorated with simple painted motifs.

Frames were typically turned from native hardwoods like beech or ash and joined with mortise and tenon joints, while the seats were hand-woven using twisted freshwater rush strands wrapped tightly around the seat rails.

Authentic pieces feature natural paint wear corresponding to handling points, evidence of hand-carved joinery, original woven rush strands showing varied patination, and layered paint finishes.

A painted side chair functions effectively as an accent piece in a hallway, bedroom corner, or desk space, providing texture and historical depth alongside contemporary furnishings.

Dust the painted wooden frame lightly with a dry microfibre cloth and keep the rush seat free of moisture, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners that could degrade the original paint layer.
