Why Sellingantiques dated this piece to THE 1920s:
Painted gilt husks and foliate borders: early twentieth-century Sheraton revival decoration.
Natural rubbing along the top crest rail: honest wear from handling.
Turned and swept front legs: classical proportions favoured during this decade.
Finely woven cane back rests: typical bedroom chair design of the period.

This is an independent date report produced by Sellingantiques using its own proprietary system. The process uses the photographs shown on this page. The system is never told the date the dealer has declared. This report shows that the two dates corroborate.

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of Grand Regency single bedroom chairs from 1920 is made from wood, cane, fabric, and paint, presented in a black and red colour scheme. Each side chair stands 87 cm high, 58 cm wide, and 52 cm deep, with a seat height of 43.5 cm. The design incorporates woven cane backrests, gilt foliate motifs, turned front legs, and striped fabric upholstery in red and cream. Additional visible details include hand-painted gold floral ornamentation along the front rail and top rail, carved tapering front legs with ring turnings, black painted wooden frames, and visible surface wear to the paint finish. These bedroom chairs suit placement in a bedroom or a dressing room as functional seating or decorative accents. They provide a practical spot to sit when dressing or reading, while adding a classic period aesthetic to the room layout. The compact proportions allow them to fit easily beside a dressing table, desk, or empty corner without overwhelming the space.

FAQs

Regency painted seating frequently incorporates classical design motifs, dark or ebonised painted finishes, and detailed hand-applied gilt ornamentation influenced by early nineteenth-century neoclassical tastes.

Cabinetmakers commonly utilised dense hardwoods such as beech or birch finished with black lacquer or paint, paired with woven rattan cane back panels and drop-in or fixed upholstered seats.

Genuine period examples display natural age-related wear to the paintwork, hand-cut joinery, hand-woven cane panels, and delicate hand-painted motifs rather than modern uniform stencilling.

A pair of decorative side chairs functions effectively when placed on either side of a hallway console table, positioned in a bedroom corner, or used as accent seating in a formal living room.

Clean the painted surface with a dry, lint-free cloth without using abrasive chemical polishes, and lightly hydrate the cane backing periodically with water to prevent the fibres drying out.
