Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This George III period Dutch marquetry armchair dates from around 1800. Constructed from dark brown mahogany with lighter fruitwood floral marquetry inlay, the timber shows a warm polished finish. The frame displays a pierced vase splat, shaped open arms, and square chamfered legs joined by a decorated frieze. A drop-in needlepoint seat features a beige ground with pink, yellow, and blue flowers, complementing the floral motifs inlaid across the crest rail, splat, arms, and front rail. The chair measures 96 cm high, 61 cm wide, and 58.5 cm deep. Suitable for use as a desk chair or an elbow chair in a study, library, or drawing room today, this piece provides comfortable seating while introducing traditional craftsmanship to an interior. The sturdy frame stands securely on square legs, while the upholstered drop-in seat offers a practical surface for everyday use in a domestic setting.

FAQs

Dutch marquetry refers to decorative furniture featuring intricate timber veneers and floral inlays, originating in the Netherlands during the 17th and 18th centuries and widely copied across Europe.

These chairs typically feature a solid mahogany frame inlaid with contrasting fruitwoods or boxwood to form detailed floral motifs, often paired with needlepoint or tapestry seat covers.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, historical wear to the underside of seat rails, uneven hand-sawn veneers, and genuine timber shrinkage along construction joints.

Position the chair as a standalone accent piece in a contemporary study, hallway, or reading nook to allow the intricate wood inlays and floral upholstery to contrast against neutral walls.

Dust regularly with a soft dry cloth and apply beeswax sparingly along the mahogany frame to nourish the timber, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources to prevent veneer movement.
