This pair of Georgian dining chairs dates from circa 1800 and is constructed from warm brown mahogany. Each chair stands on straight square legs joined by box stretchers beneath a seat upholstered in striped fabric featuring vertical bands of purple, cream, and taupe. The uprights are reeded along their front faces, and the backs incorporate a flat top rail above a horizontal cross-rail set with four turned spherical bosses. The seats have been re-webbed and re-covered, leaving them in sound structural order with tight joinery throughout the wooden frames. Standing at 83 cm in height, these armless chairs slide easily beneath a standard dining table or serve as occasional seating in a drawing room, hallway, or bedroom.

Dining chairs from around 1800 reflect late Georgian and early Regency design, characterised by classical proportions, clean architectural lines, and refined timber detailing. Common features include reeded stiles, crest rails, turned sphere or horizontal bar back splats, and square tapered legs connected by stretchers.

Primary timber for quality seating of this era was solid mahogany, valued for its density, rich grain structure, and durability. Frame joinery utilised traditional mortise and tenon construction, with drop-in or over-the-rail upholstered seats covered in silk, wool damask, or striped textiles.

Authentic period chairs exhibit signs of hand construction, including subtle irregularities in hand-carved mouldings, hand-sawn frame rails, and pegged tenon joints. The timber displays natural patination, dark oxidisation in unpolished areas beneath the seat frames, and historical wear on the lower stretchers.

Period side chairs can be paired with modern minimalist dining tables to create an eclectic architectural contrast. They also perform effectively as single accent chairs beside a desk, within a hallway, or flanking a side table.

Mahogany frames should be dusted regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and treated periodically with natural beeswax polish to maintain wood hydration. Upholstered seats require gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment and immediate spot-cleaning for spills using neutral textile cleaners.
