Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This French Louis XVI style side cabinet from 1910 presents a warm brown wood finish employing walnut and kingwood veneers arranged in a checkerboard parquetry pattern across the doors and drawer fronts. Ormolu foliate mounts decorate the vertical uprights flanking the central upper door, while a pierced brass gallery borders the top surface. Open serpentine tier shelves project from both sides, accompanied by curved drawers and a lower open shelf supported by slender turned legs with brass sabots. Cast metal drop handles operate the drawers, and decorative metal escutcheons accent the doors. The piece stands 140 cm high, 68 cm wide, and 32 cm deep. Placed in a drawing room, hallway, or living space, it functions as a display surface for decorative objects while offering enclosed storage within its cabinet and drawers.

FAQs

Parquetry furniture gained prominent popularity in 18th-century France during the Louis XV and Louis XVI periods. Master cabinetmakers used geometric wood veneers to create intricate patterns across cabinet doors and surfaces, defining French neoclassical decorative arts.

These cabinets are typically constructed using solid hardwoods such as oak or pine for the secondary frame, dressed in fine veneers of kingwood, walnut, tulipwood, or mahogany. They are accented with cast gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts and brass galleries.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-cut parquetry veneers, hand-chased gilt-bronze mounts with natural oxidisation, dovetail joinery in the drawer linings, and original lock mechanisms stamped by traditional French locksmiths.

A parquetry cabinet serves as a focal accent piece when placed in a hallway, reception room, or master suite. Contrast its intricate woodwork against muted walls and modern minimalist decor to highlight the historical craftsmanship.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish annually along the wood grain. Avoid direct sunlight and moisture, and clean metal ormolu mounts with a soft brush without applying harsh metal cleaners to surrounding wood.
