Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This pair of antique Chinese horseshoe armchairs dates from the 1930 period and displays a traditional Chinese style constructed from warm brown fruitwood. Each chair incorporates a continuous curved horseshoe crest rail, vertical dark wooden spindles, a central carved splat with bone inlay, and a tightly woven cane seat supported on crossing X-framed legs. The wood exhibits a medium grain finish with lighter honey tones across the curved armrests and crossbars, contrasting against darker vertical spindles and central splats. In a modern home, these armchairs function effectively as statement occasional seating in a living room, study, or hallway, adding distinctive architectural silhouette and traditional craftsmanship to the interior space.

FAQs

A Chinese horseshoe chair, traditionally known as a jiaoyi when constructed with a folding frame, features a rounded crest rail sweeping around to form the armrests. Originating in traditional Chinese furniture design, these chairs were historically reserved for high-status individuals due to their complex joinery and structural balance.

These chairs typically feature fine hardwoods or fruitwoods, woven cane or cord for the seat panel, and complex mortise-and-tenon joinery. Decorative elements often incorporate hand-carved central splats, bone inlay accents, or metal reinforcement plates.

Authentic pieces feature traditional wood joinery crafted without modern nails or screws, natural wear patterns on footrests and crest rails, and hand-woven cane or cord seats. Patination across the timber and hand-carved decorative motifs on the splat also indicate age and craft.

Place a pair of horseshoe chairs opposite a neutral sofa to create a balanced conversational area, or style a single chair as a sculptural accent in a reading corner. The continuous curved crest rail contrasts effectively against contemporary clean lines and minimalist backgrounds.

Keep the timber away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture to prevent wood movement or cane degradation. Clean surfaces gently with a dry cloth and apply microcrystalline wax occasionally to protect the finish.
