Pair of Ebonised and Parcel-gilt Cane Bergère Armchairs

1900 - 1920
Description

A striking pair of generously proportioned bergère armchairs, combining ebonised frames with parcel-gilt detailing, natural cane work and black velvet cushions.

Each chair has a gently curved crest rail enriched with gilt fluting and a row of gilt ball ornaments. The shaped back and side panels are finely caned, creating a light and open appearance while retaining the enveloping form associated with the traditional bergère chair.

The sweeping arms terminate in bold inward-scrolling ends, with upholstered arm pads providing additional comfort. Further gilt mouldings, roundels and fluted details highlight the dark ebonised frames.

The chairs retain their caned seats, which are fitted with deep removable cushions upholstered in black velvet. They stand on fluted sabre-shaped front legs and swept rear legs, all terminating in brass caps and castors.

This pair of 1910 Grand Regency style bergère armchairs is constructed from ebonised wood with parcel-gilt detailing, woven natural cane panels, black velvet upholstery, and brass hardware. Each chair presents a gently curved crest rail enriched with gilt fluting and gilt ball ornaments, sweeping arms ending in bold inward scrolls with upholstered arm pads, and dark frames highlighted by further gilt mouldings, roundels, and fluted elements. The deep removable seat cushions are covered in black velvet over caned seats, and the pieces stand on fluted sabre-shaped front legs and swept rear legs that terminate in brass caps and castors. Each armchair measures 95 cm high, 67 cm wide, and 81 cm deep. These armchairs function effectively as statement seating in a formal drawing room, a traditional library, or a spacious study. They integrate easily beside a fireplace or writing desk to provide comfortable accent seating while introducing classic Regency style and dark timber tones to the interior space.

A Regency ebonised bergere armchair typically features a dark, stained or painted wooden frame combined with woven cane panels on the back and sides. Decorative gilding, scroll arms, classical reeding, and brass castors are standard design elements associated with this era.

These pieces utilise hardwoods such as beech or mahogany that are ebonised to simulate ebony wood. Decorative highlights are achieved using gold leaf parcel-gilding, complemented by natural cane webbing, brass fittings, and fabric or leather upholstery.

Authentic period examples exhibit hand-carved details, traditional mortise and tenon joinery, original brass castors secured with square cups or pins, and natural wear to the parcel-gilt highlights and ebonised finish.

Their striking dark silhouette and metallic accents allow them to serve as focal accent chairs in neutral rooms, formal living spaces, or flanking a side table in a contemporary library setting.

Cane panelling requires light dusting with a soft brush and occasional mild humidification to prevent drying out. Ebonised and parcel-gilt finishes should be cleaned using a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding harsh chemical polish or abrasive liquids.
