Antique Regency Rope Twist Mahogany Toilet Mirror

19th century
Description

A wonderful antique Regency period toilet mirror or dressing table mirror within a mahogany rope twist frame dating from circa 1820. The frame is constructed with expertly turned “barley twist” supports and cross-rails, showcasing the peak of late-Georgian ornamental woodturning; the rope twist is a nod to Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar in 1805 and was fashionable ornamentation throughout the regency period. The “crutch” or swing-frame design allows for adjustment of the mirror plate making it an ideal addition to a dressing table or chest of drawers. An exceptional piece of Regency-era craftsmanship.

This Regency toilet mirror is an antique dressing table mirror made from mahogany with brass hardware and glass. The warm brown piece takes the form of a swivelling rectangular glass frame supported by rope-twist turned pillars with turned finials. The surface exhibits a polished warm brown colour with visible figuring, barley twist cross-rails, small turned feet at the base, and brass swivel knobs on either side, alongside foxing and a loss of silvering on the original mirror plate, an incomplete brass knob on one side, and reduced finials. The mirror stands 57 cm high, 60 cm wide, and 30 cm deep. Suitable for use in a bedroom or dressing room, the piece sits comfortably upon a dressing table, chest of drawers, or sideboard top. The swing-frame design permits adjustment of the mirror plate for daily grooming tasks.

A Regency toilet mirror, also referred to as a dressing table mirror or swing mirror, is a freestanding tabletop mirror produced during the early nineteenth century. Designed to rest atop chests of drawers or vanity tables, these pieces typically feature swivelling rectangular or oval frames supported by carved wooden posts.

These mirrors were predominantly crafted from solid mahogany or flame mahogany veneers, prized for their deep grain and durability. Supporting elements often featured brass thumbscrews for adjusting the frame angle, along with silvered plate glass set within mortise and tenon jointed timber framing.

Authentic Regency mirrors exhibit hand-carved decorative elements, such as rope-twist column turnings and carved finials. Look for natural patination on the mahogany, original brass adjustment hardware, and signs of age on the mirror backing, such as slight foxing or oxidisation of the mercury silvering.

A mahogany toilet mirror functions as a focal accent when placed on a hallway console table, bedroom sideboard, or dedicated vanity area. Positioning the piece alongside neutral ceramic vessel options or contemporary lighting creates a balanced contrast between traditional woodwork and modern decor.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a soft lint-free cloth and applying beeswax polish sparingly along the direction of the wood grain. Clean the glass carefully with a dry microfibre cloth, avoiding liquid cleaners near the timber edges to prevent moisture from seeping into the wooden frame or deteriorating the backing.
