This Victorian floor-standing cheval mirror is executed in dark brown mahogany and clear glass. The piece consists of a vertically oriented glass plate held within a solid wooden frame with an arched top, mounted on curved upright supports featuring carved scroll details and small circular turned bosses. The lower structure comprises a shaped horizontal plinth base supported by four outward-curving cabriole legs with decorative carving at the joints and small feet at the extremities. Old paint marks remain on the timber surfaces. The entire assembly stands 166 cm high, 80 cm wide, and 59 cm deep at the base. Suitable for placement in a dressing room, bedroom, or hallway, this large dressing mirror provides a full-length reflection for daily use. The proportions allow it to stand freely on the floor against a wall or within an interior space, where its traditional English country house aesthetic complements period and classic furnishings. The mounted base and swivelling frame design permit adjustment of the mirror angle while remaining stable on standard interior flooring.

A cheval mirror, derived from the French word for horse due to its four-legged frame, is a full-length standing mirror mounted on a swivel mechanism. Introduced in the late 18th century, it became a standard piece of dressing room furniture during the Victorian era.

Traditional cheval mirrors are constructed from hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak, featuring mercury-silvered or silvered plate glass. The framing often incorporates cast brass pivots, threaded adjustment knobs, and hidden castors beneath the base.

Authentic 19th-century examples typically display hand-carved details, heavy timber bases designed for stability, and original iron or brass castors. Inspecting the back reveals hand-sawn timber panelling and evidence of age-related desilvering or light foxing on the glass.

Position a floor-standing mirror near natural light sources in a bedroom, dressing room, or grand hallway to amplify space and reflect architectural features. Pairing dark timber frames with neutral wall tones creates balanced visual contrast.

Clean the glass using a dry microfiber cloth or a mild, non-ammoniated cleaner applied to the cloth rather than directly to the glass. Maintain the wood frame by applying a natural beeswax polish twice a year along the grain.
