This Victorian Howard style armchair by SF CULLEN displays a stripped-back aesthetic, revealing its internal construction beneath neutral brown hessian under-upholstery. The structural frame includes scroll arms and a deep seat, supported at the front by dark turned wood legs mounted on brass castors. The exposed textiles and raw padding highlight the inner craftsmanship and structural framework of the seating piece. Measuring 87 cm high, 79 cm wide, and 101 cm deep, this armchair suits placement in a living room, study, or reading corner. It functions well as a comfortable lounge seat or an accent chair within an English Country House interior scheme. The traditional profile allows it to integrate easily into both historic and contemporary domestic settings.

FAQs

Originated in the 19th century by Howard & Sons, Howard style armchairs are defined by their deep seats, low profile, padded scroll arms, and exceptional ergonomic design. They represent a classic British country house aesthetic.

Traditional construction incorporates a solid hardwood frame, coil springs, horsehair filling, and heavy jute hessian or calico webbing. The front legs are typically turned timber fitted with brass castors.

Authentic period examples often feature maker stamps or printed ticking fabric linings on the underside or back legs. Distinctive physical traits include turned front legs with brass castors and deeply sprung low seating.

A Howard style chair can be re-upholstered in contemporary linen, velvet, or textured wool to seamlessly bridge historic comfort with modern aesthetics. Positioning it alongside a streamlined side table creates a balanced living space.

Keep the armchair away from direct heat sources and harsh sunlight to prevent timber drying and fabric degradation. Dust exposed woodwork regularly with a soft cloth and consider professional re-upholstery to preserve the frames integrity.
