Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Howard and Sons were prominent nineteenth-century London cabinetmakers renowned for producing high-quality upholstered armchairs and sofas. The tub chair style features a continuous curved back and armrest structure, designed to cradle the sitter while maintaining a compact footprint within drawing rooms and private suites.

Authentic pieces from this period were constructed with solid timber frames, typically oak or beech, stuffed with natural materials such as horsehair and coconut fibre. The seat construction utilised hand-tied steel coil springs, supported by turned wood legs and fitted brass castors.

Original pieces frequently feature maker stamps on the inside of the rear legs, stamped brass castors bearing the company name, or branded monogram canvas ticking beneath the upholstery. Specific frame construction techniques and proportions also help confirm authenticity.

A tub chair functions as a standalone accent piece in a bedroom corner, study, or living room seating arrangement. Combining period seating with contemporary side tables or minimalist backdrops creates a balanced, layered aesthetic.

Vacuum fabric regularly using a soft brush attachment to remove dust without damaging the weave. Timber legs should be waxed periodically, brass castors kept clean, and professional upholstery conservators consulted for deep cleaning or structural repairs.
