This 1920 Arts and Crafts pill box takes an octagonal sterling silver form with a hinged lid. A hand-painted landscape enamel plaque sits on top of the lid, displaying shades of green, brown, and pale cream under a glossy glaze, with dark tree motifs along the horizon. Horizontal reeded border trims run around the upper edge of the base and the lower edge of the lid, framing British silver hallmarks stamped along the side of the lid and on the base. Minor surface patina and fine handling marks show across the polished silver body. Measuring 2 cm high, 3.5 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep, this small container suits placement on a bedside table to hold small items like pills or rings. It brings a touch of English Country House style to a dressing table or display surface.

Arts and Crafts enamel boxes typically feature hand-hammered or cast silver mounts inset with painted vitreous enamel plaques depicting naturalistic scenes, landscapes, or stylised botanical motifs. Originating in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, these pieces emphasised individual craftsmanship and artistic handwork over mass production.

These decorative boxes were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate fitted with vitreous enamel tops. Vitreous enamel is created by fusing powdered glass to a metal surface at high temperatures to form durable, colourful artwork.

Authentic examples usually bear silver hallmarks, makers marks, or distinct artistic features such as hand-applied enamel work and irregular, hand-crafted mounting rims. Inspecting the hallmark dates on the silver mount and examining the depth of the enamel plaque helps determine authenticity.

Small silver enamel boxes can be displayed on a bedside table, vanity tray, or decorative bookshelf alongside ceramics and books. They function as storage for small items or as standalone accent pieces that add historic texture to a room.

Clean the silver surfaces gently with a soft cotton cloth and non-abrasive silver polish, taking care to avoid getting polish on the enamel plaque. Wipe the enamel top with a dry or slightly damp soft cloth, as harsh chemicals or sudden temperature changes can crack the glass coating.
