18th Century Italian Mirror

18th century
Description

Exceptional 18th Century Italian split plate mirror, original soft gilding. Original mirror plate, original back.

Recycling is a large part in today’s life and there was actually a form of recycling that started in the 18th century. There was a heavy tax on glass coming from abroad so mirrors were made as a “split plate”, in two sections to avoid the tax and costly import duties.

This 18th-century Italian wall mirror is rendered in giltwood with a gold finish and features a prominent carved eagle crest at the top, floral side festoons, and dentil moulding framing the perimeter. The piece incorporates scrolled feet at the base, ornate carved floral capitals along the sides, and a patinated two-part mirror plate split horizontally across the middle. The whole item measures 180 cm high, 89 cm wide, and 5 cm deep. Suitable for interior placement in a home today, this mirror works effectively mounted above a sideboard in a dining room, hallway, or living area. The construction uses original soft gilding over timber, combined with the original glass plate and backing. The patination shows distinct historical ageing across the reflective surface, while the overall profile combines classical symmetry with elaborate ornamentation typical of the period.

Eighteenth-century Italian mirrors are defined by intricate hand-carved wooden frames finished with water gilding, often featuring Neoclassical or Rococo motifs such as eagles, floral garlands, and architectural mouldings. Frames from this period typically house hand-blown mercury glass plates made in multiple sections due to historical manufacturing constraints.

These mirrors were constructed using softwoods or hardwoods carved by hand, coated with layers of gesso and colored clay bole, and finished with thin sheets of gold leaf. The reflective mirror plates were produced using a mercury and tin amalgam applied to blown glass.

Authentic pieces display hand-carved timber backs, visible lap joinery, layered red or yellow clay bole beneath worn gold leaf, and natural oxidisation or foxing on mercury glass mirror plates. Multi-plate mirror construction and irregular glass thickness are also key indicators of period origin.

An antique giltwood mirror serves as a focal point when placed above a modern console table, marble mantelpiece, or in a minimalist hallway. The architectural carving and patinated gilding create visual contrast against neutral walls and contemporary tailored furnishings.

Dust the carved gilding gently using a soft, dry bristle brush or microfiber cloth without applying water or chemical cleaners, which dissolve water gilding. Clean the glass plate using a damp cloth squeezed almost dry, avoiding moisture contact with the surrounding gilded frame edges.
