These two large wall mirrors date to 1880, representing the Rococo Revival style. Constructed from wood, plaster, glass, and gold leaf, the frames display a combination of cream paint and parcel gilt finishes, complemented by water-gilded inner slips. Each frame incorporates detailed ornamentation, including carved acanthus leaves, rococo scrollwork, floral cresting, and a beaded sight moulding, housing mercury silvered mirror plates with light foxing alongside later papered backing boards. The maximum dimensions for each mirror measure 100 cm high by 88 cm wide. These pieces function effectively as wall mirrors in a home today, suitable for placement above a sideboard in a living room, hallway, or dining area.

Parcel gilding refers to a technique where only selective decorative areas of a frame are covered in gold leaf while the remaining surfaces are painted or left un-gilded. Popularised during the Victorian and Rococo Revival eras, these frames feature detailed composition ornament applied over a timber substrate.

Frames from this era were typically constructed with a pine or softwood core coated in gesso, decorated with moulded composition ornament, and completed with gold leaf gilding and cream or off-white paint finishes.

Authentic nineteenth-century examples frequently feature hand-carved joinery or timber backboards, natural degradation or light foxing on the glass plate, and areas of wear revealing underlying red bole or white gesso beneath the gilding.

A matching pair can be positioned symmetrically above dual alcoves, placed above a pair of bedside tables, or hung side by side above a sideboard to bring architectural symmetry and light depth into contemporary schemes.

Clean gilded frames using a dry, soft camel-hair brush or microfibre duster to remove surface dust without disturbing loose plaster ornament. Avoid liquid cleaning solutions on gilded areas, applying glass cleaner sparingly via a cloth strictly to the mirror plate.
