Description

A rather stunning set of four George III painted chairs.

Circa 1800.

Most interesting drawn, with an almost art-deco design to the back rests.

The finely hand painted details really pop and make for a super decorative and versatile set of chairs.

The construction of the chairs and style in which they have been painted leans towards an attribution to Gillows.

Structurally sound, seats intact, some paintwork has been refreshed- historically and sympathetically.

A set of four George III black-painted dining chairs, dating from around 1800 in the Georgian period, brings classic English country house style to any interior. Each chair stands on straight tapering legs and features a woven rush seat above a hand-painted floral apron, paired with a geometric lattice back incorporating decorative medallions. The timber construction displays a dark finish accented with delicate ornamentation, showing signs of historical and sympathetic paintwork refreshment while remaining structurally sound with intact seating. Measuring 89 cm high, 48 cm wide, and 53 cm deep with a seat height of 44 cm, these versatile side chairs function effectively around a dining table or as accent seating in a living room, hallway, or bedroom. The functional design suits traditional and transitional interior schemes, providing practical seating while offering visual interest through the decorative painted motifs and open lattice work of the back rests.

George III painted furniture, popular in the late 18th century, often features Neoclassical motifs, delicate hand-painted floral decoration, and lacquered finishes inspired by classical antiquity and Asian decorative arts.

These chairs typically utilised European hardwoods such as beech, birch, or pine as a frame for paint application, frequently paired with woven rush or cane seating surfaces.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit natural surface craquelure, subtle wear to hand-painted details where hands and clothing make contact, hand-carved joinery, and visible age on the wooden undertones.

Antique painted side chairs can be integrated alongside modern dining tables, placed as accent seating in hallways, or arranged individually in bedrooms to create visual contrast against contemporary backdrops.

Keep painted surfaces free of excess moisture and harsh chemicals, dusting lightly with a soft microfibre cloth; rush seats should be kept away from direct heat sources to prevent natural fibres from drying out.
