This pair of 19th-century Italian wall mirrors belongs to the Italian Rococo style, rendered in gold-coloured giltwood with glass. Each piece displays an asymmetrical cartouche silhouette, richly hand-carved with shell crests, flower heads, and pierced scrolling frames surrounding original mercury mirror plates. The visible ornamentation includes detailed acanthus leaf carvings, floral cresting, and ornate finials at the top and bottom tips. Each mirror measures 65 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 3.5 cm deep. Such decorative wall mirrors suit placement in a traditional hallway, above a sideboard in a dining room, or mounted over a mantelpiece in a living space. They bring historic character and reflective warmth to a room interior, pairing easily with classic or eclectic interior schemes.

FAQs

Italian giltwood mirrors from this period typically feature elaborate hand-carving, Rococo scrolls, foliage, and water-gilded finish over timber frames.

These mirrors were crafted from carved softwoods, prepared with coats of gesso, and finished using gold leaf before installing mercury-backed glass plates.

Authentic pieces display subtle wear to the gilding revealing the underlying bole layer, along with hand-cut timber backing and mercury glass oxidisation.

A pair of giltwood mirrors can be positioned symmetrically above a console table or flanking a fireplace to introduce architectural contrast against contemporary walls.

Dust giltwood frames gently using a soft, dry brush, avoiding liquids that dissolve gesso, and clean the glass plates with a minimally damp microfibre cloth.
